Monroe Street Public Safety Station to close
Staff to be reassigned. JWN policing issues not fully resolved.
Jefferson Westside Neighbors
The Eugene Police Department will be moving staff from the Monroe Street Public Safety
Station sometime after January 2012, when the new police headquarters at 300 Country
Club Road is occupied. At that time, the Crime Prevention Unit staff currently housed at
Monroe Street will be consolidated with most other police staff at the new facility, and the
lease on the Monroe Street Station will not be renewed.
After the move, you can receive walk-in police services at the new headquarters, 24 hours
a day. For emergencies, continue to call 911; for non-emergencies continue to call
541.682.5111.
When this announcement was made, Police Chief Pete Kerns asked the Eugene Police
Commission’s Outreach and Resource Committee to talk to neighbors about their
concerns. The committee gathered input from various groups in the Jefferson Westside
Neighbors and Whitaker Community Council communities, including residents, business
owners, non-profit groups, service providers, and educators.
The committee compiled the information they'd received; and on July 14, presented
recommendations based on this information to the full Police Commission and Police
Chief Kerns.
Read final recommendations.
While the recommendations had many positive items, the report did not adequately
address thechronic problems with the Monroe and Charnel-Mulligan Parks, which was a
top priority communicated at the JWN meeting where the Commission’s Outreach and
Resource Committee asked JWN members for their views.
The recommendations include a very general suggestion to "redeploy freed-up staff and
volunteer resources to crime prevention in Monroe Street neighborhood as well as city
wide." The inclusion of "city-wide" takes any real impact out of the recommendation, as far
as JWN and Whiteaker needs.
The JWN Executive Board hopes to form a JWN "Crime and Public Safety Committee" to
press for more bike patrols and other crime prevention assistance from the City.
You can get additional information from the Police Commission website.
If you would like to be involved in helping ensure the JWN receives adequate police
patrols and other public safety services, please contact the JWN Chair.
